  19. WHAT IS WINPRINT?
  20.  
  21.      WinPrint is a Windows shareware application that allows
  22.      you to easily print ASCII text files from within
  23.      Windows.  It allows you to specify headers and footers
  24.      with page numbers, fonts, margins, landscape v.
  25.      portrait mode, and "multiple pages up" printing.  See
  26.      the WINPRINT.HLP file for a more complete description.
  27.      
  28.      WinPrint was designed from the very beginning to be a
  29.      tool for printing plain text files.  Version 1.3 and
  30.      Version 1.4 do not support the printing of graphics,
  31.      word processing documents, or spreadsheets.  My goal
  32.      from has been to keep WinPrint as small, efficient, and
  33.      simple as possible.
  34.      
  35.      If you want to print graphics use PaintBrush it works
  36.      just fine.  If you want to print your word processing
  37.      documents, use your word processor, and if you want to
  38.      print spreadsheets use your spreadsheet package; they
  39.      all print nicely.  But if you want to print plain ASCII
  40.      text files use WinPrint!
  41.  
  42.      The WINPRINT.HLP file contains all the documentation
  43.      you will need.  It also contains information on how to
  44.      register WinPrint.
  45.      
  46. GETTING STARTED
  47.      
  48.      A few quick notes on what is needed to run WinPrint:
  49.      
  50.      Under Windows 3.0 and 3.0a you need the following
  51.      Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) in your path:
  52.           
  53.           TDUTIL.DLL     - WinPrint Support DLL
  54.           COMMDLG.DLL    - Microsoft Common Dialogs DLL
  55.      
  56.      You will also need the main WINPRINT.EXE executable
  57.      file and the help file (WINPRINT.HLP).
  58.      
  59.      I recommend that you create a "WINAPPS" directory off
  60.      of your root directory in which you place all of your
  61.      "small" Windows applications such as WinPrint.  Copy
  62.      the above files into this directory and make sure that
  63.      the directory is in your path statement.
  64.      
  65.      You can now run WinPrint just as you would any Windows
  66.      application.  See the section in the WINPRINT.HLP file
  67.      titled STARTING WINPRINT for more details.
  68.      
  69. NOTES TO USERS OF WINPRINT 1.3
  70.  
  71.      WinPrint 1.32 was designed Windows 2.x application.  It
  72.      worked correctly under Windows 3.0 because it adhered
  73.      to Microsoft's programming guidelines for Windows.
  74.      
  75.      WinPrint 1.4 has been designed as a Windows 3.x
  76.      application.  It takes advantage of features found only
  77.      in Windows 3.0 and above.  As such, it will not run on
  78.      Windows 2.x, and will not operate correctly with
  79.      printer drivers that have not been updated to the
  80.      Windows 3.0 specification.
  81.      
  82.      Versions of Windows previous to Windows 3.0 provided no
  83.      way for applications to store printer settings
  84.      "locally."  For example any change made to printer
  85.      settings from within an application (such as landscape
  86.      mode) were made system wide.  The Windows 3.0 printer
  87.      driver specification allows for applications to change
  88.      printer settings locally.  WinPrint 1.4 takes advantage
  89.      of this, and adheres to the policy that no application
  90.      except Control Panel can make system wide printer
  91.      setting changes.
  92.      
  93.      One of the biggest bugs in WinPrint 1.32 was that it
  94.      incorrectly selected fonts.  For example you would tell
  95.      it to print using a 10 point font, but it would
  96.      actually use a font much smaller.  This has been
  97.      corrected in WinPrint 1.4.
  98.      
  99.      Because of the changes to WinPrint 1.4 are fundamental
  100.      in nature, saved configurations from earlier versions
  101.      will not be converted.  It might have been possible to
  102.      do a partial conversion of your settings to the new
  103.      format, but there are so many new features and bug
  104.      fixes in 1.4 that the conversion would have been
  105.      inaccurate at best.  The decision was made that it
  106.      would be easier for the user to re-create your settings
  107.      than to try to figure out what was converted correctly
  108.      and what was not.
  109.      
  110.      WinPrint 1.32 saved all configuration information in
  111.      the WIN.INI file.  WinPrint 1.4 saves all of it's
  112.      configuration information in the WINPRINT.INI file.
  113.      The format of the information has changed, but when
  114.      WinPrint 1.4 is run on a machine for the first time, it
  115.      copies your registration information to the
  116.      WINPRINT.INI file.  Once you run WinPrint 1.4 for the
  117.      first time you can delete all WinPrint related sections
  118.      from your WIN.INI file if you wish.
  119.      
  120.      I have also changed the format of WinPrint registration
  121.      numbers.  WinPrint 1.4 will correctly decode your 1.32
  122.      registration number and convert it to the new format.
  123.      This has been done for several reasons:
  124.      
  125.      1) The old WinPrint registration number was up to 12
  126.      characters long and was too difficult to enter.
  127.      
  128.      2) The new number format allows me to more easily track
  129.      what version of WinPrint a user is using.
  130.  
  131. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  132.      Version 1.41 of WinPrint has been extensively tested.
  133.      However there are a few problems that are known and are
  134.      not worth the time it would take to fix at this point:
  135.      
  136.      SOME WINDOWS 3.0 PRINTER DRIVERS ARE BUGGY
  137.           Many of the Dot Matrix printer drivers shipped
  138.      with Windows 3.0 are buggy, and most do not in fact
  139.      conform the the Windows 3.0 printer driver
  140.      specification.  Because of this you will not be able to
  141.      change printer settings from WinPrint with these
  142.      drivers.  See the WINPRINT.HLP file for more
  143.      information on this.
  144.      
  145.      POSTSCRIPT EMULATORS REPORT INCORRECT PAGE SIZE
  146.           Several PostScript addon products and emulators
  147.      incorrectly report page size to Windows.  The result is
  148.      that when WinPrint is set up so all margins are set to
  149.      0.00", some text is printed "off page."  If you
  150.      encounter this problem simply increase all four margins
  151.      until the problem goes away (usually 0.10" works).
  152.      This problem has been noted on the HP LaserJet IIIsi in
  153.      PostScript mode and the PacificPage Postscript
  154.      cartridge for the HP LaserJet II.
  155.      
  156.      DOT MATRIX DRIVERS SELECT FONTS INCORRECTLY
  157.           Some Windows 3.0 dot matrix printer drivers allow
  158.      you to set the resoultion that they print graphics at.
  159.      When these drivers are set at their lowest resolution
  160.      settings they print some fonts too big.  The easy work
  161.      around is to set the driver up to use higher resolution
  162.      or print only with device based fonts (see
  163.      WINPRINT.HLP for more details).

  165. VERSION HISTORY
  166.      Version 1.41 November 16, 1991
  167.      This version is a maintenence release.  Verion 1.40 had
  168.      a major bug in the command line handling (it was
  169.      essentailly compeletely broken).  Version 1.41 also
  170.      removes the need for SHELL.DLL.
  171.      
  172.      Version 1.40 November 1, 1991
  173.      After over a year and a half, there is finally a new
  174.      release of WinPrint!  This version is completely re-
  175.      vamped and updated for Windows 3.0 and 3.1.  New
  176.      features include multiple column printing, Windows
  177.      help, and drag drop from the Windows 3.1 file manager.

  182. LICENSE INFORMATION
  183.  
  184.      WinPrint is not and has never been public domain
  185.      software, nor is it free software.  WinPrint is a
  186.      commercial application distributed as shareware.
  187.  
  188.      Non-licensed users are granted a limited license
  189.      (registration) to use WinPrint on a 21-day trial basis
  190.      for the purpose of determining whether WinPrint is
  191.      suitable for their needs.  The use of WinPrint, except
  192.      for the initial 21-day trial, requires registration.
  193.      The use of unlicensed (un-registered) copies of
  194.      WinPrint by any person, business, corporation,
  195.      government agency or any other entity is strictly
  196.      prohibited.
  197.  
  198.      A single user license permits a user to use WinPrint
  199.      only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  200.      program on different computers, but may not use the
  201.      program on more than one computer at the same time.
  202.  
  203.      No one may modify or patch the WinPrint executable and
  204.      documentation files in any way, including but not
  205.      limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise
  206.      reverse engineering the program.
  207.  
  208.      A limited license is granted to copy and distribute
  209.      WinPrint only for the trial use of others, subject to
  210.      the above limitations, and also the following:
  211.  
  212.      1)   WinPrint must be copied in unmodified form,
  213.           complete with the file containing this license
  214.           information.
  215.  
  216.      2)   The WinPrint product consists of the following
  217.           files:
  218.           WINPRINT.EXE, TDUTIL.DLL, README.TXT, and
  219.           WINPRINT.HLP.  All of these files must be copied
  220.           in unmodified form.
  221.  
  222.      3)   WinPrint may not be distributed in conjunction
  223.           with any other product with out a specific license
  224.           to do so from Charles E. Kindel, Jr.
  225.  
  226.      4)   No fee, charge, or other compensation may be
  227.           requested or accepted, except as authorized below:
  228.  
  229.           A)   Operators of electronic bulletin board
  230.                systems (sysops) may make WinPrint available
  231.                for downloading only as long as the above
  232.                conditions are met.  An overall or time-
  233.                dependent charge for the use of the bulletin
  234.                board system is permitted as long as there is
  235.                not a specific charge for the download of
  236.                WinPrint.
  237.      
  238.           B)   Vendors may charge a disk duplication and
  239.                handling fee, which may not exceed eight
  240.                dollars.
  241.  
  242. LIMITED WARRANTY
  243.  
  244.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. guarantees your satisfaction
  245.      with this product for a period of 90 days from the date
  246.      of original purchase.  If you are unsatisfied with
  247.      WinPrint within that time period contact Charles E.
  248.      Kindel, Jr. via normal or electronic mail for a full
  249.      refund.
  250.  
  251.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. warrants that the program will
  252.      perform in substantial compliance with the
  253.      documentation supplied with the software product.  If a
  254.      significant defect in the product is found, the
  255.      Purchaser may obtain a refund.  In no event will such a
  256.      refund exceed the purchase price of the product.
  257.  
  258.      EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, CHARLES E. KINDEL, JR.
  259.      DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,
  260.      INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
  261.      MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE,
  262.      WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE
  263.      DEFECTIVE, THE PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE
  264.      ENTIRE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR
  265.      CORRECTION AND ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.

  267.      ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION

  270.      LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE INABILITY TO USE

  272.      ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  274.      Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  275.      your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to
  276.      its contents.

  278. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  279.  
  280.      Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is
  281.      subject to restrictions as set forth in subdivision
  282.      (b)(3)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer
  283.      Software clause at 252.227-7013.
